I am a a media professional with more than 7 years of varied global experience in TV news journalism, reporting, videography, communications and peer training. I have covered technology, culture, economic, health and social issues as well as any regional breaking stories from San Francisco for a range of international news channels. I also help startups and small businesses tell their stories through video and other creative assets. I am the founder of Founder Stories, a repository of entrepreneurship told in the first person through text, video and photographs.
Prior to moving to California, I was an anchor and reporter in Beijing for the new English-language television channel, CNC World. I devised, produced and anchored China’s first full-length tech show in English, Tech Talk. I also reported from all over the Chinese capital and created the channel’s first programme recorded entirely in-the-field. Although I learned some Mandarin Chinese, I recognised it would take me a lifetime to ever become fluent! These days I’m trying to pick up Russian.
While living in China, I co-founded a Chinese-technology-focussed blog for expats and other interested parties: Beijing Tech Report.
Earlier in my career, I presented the hourly bulletins on Paris-based international news channel, France24, and co-hosted a weekly digital trends show, Tech24. I anchored breaking news stories from the ousting of Hosni Mubarak to the Great East Japan earthquake to the arrest of Dominique Strauss-Kahn. I also reported on events including the e-G8, the launch of an official inquiry into former French Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde, and the birth of baby Sarkozy. I speak fluent French.
I have a first class honours degree (BA) in English and European Literature from Warwick University and a Masters (MA) with Distinction in Literature, Culture and Modernity from the University of Southampton. I graduated with a postgraduate diploma in Broadcast Journalism (Distinction) from City University in London. Never one to give up on a story, I narrowly avoided being arrested at the Camden Roundhouse while in hot pursuit of music producer, Mark Ronson.
I cut my journalistic teeth in UK radio as a freelance newsreader. Then at Sky News in London, I cajoled all manner of high profile figures on to the air as a guest booker, before hopping across the channel to join the France24 team in Paris as a package producer in 2009.
I have had some unusual hobbies including church bell-ringing and a stint as a drum ‘n’ bass DJ, but remain faithful to tech, literature and the arts. I am currently learning how to swing dance. Travel has always been a priority wherever possible; highlights include backpacking in Jamaica, visiting the floating villages of Cambodia, and a trip on the Trans-Siberian from Beijing to Moscow.
